Tile quantity calculator
Estimate a straight tile grid with grout joints, compare rotated tiles and round extras into boxes. See tile counts, box surplus and estimated box cost.
How to use this tool
Replace the example values with your own, then choose Calculate tiles. Changing an input clears the previous result until you calculate again. Copy the result or download a CSV to keep a record.
Method
Convert room dimensions from feet to inches. Across each axis, tile positions = ceiling((room dimension + joint width) ÷ (tile dimension + joint width)); the last tile needs no extra joint beyond the edge. Multiply rows by columns, round extra tiles up, then round the total up to full boxes. A second grid rotates the tile 90°.
Worked example
For a 10 × 10 ft floor with 12 × 12 in tiles and no grout gap, the grid is 10 × 10 = 100 positions. Add 10% for 110 tiles, or 11 boxes of 10.
Assumptions and limits
This is a conservative straight-grid purchasing estimate, not an installation plan. Each grid position consumes one whole tile, including cut edges; reusable offcuts are not optimized. Centered, diagonal and patterned layouts, obstacles, movement joints, adhesive and grout quantities need separate planning. Extra percentage is editable and is not a guarantee against shortages.
