Backgammon pip-count calculator

Count both sides’ remaining backgammon pips, including bar and borne-off checkers. Validate fifteen checkers per side, compare counts and export a point breakdown.

About the game and this companion

A pip count totals the distance each checker still needs to travel to bear off. It describes the race count, not the full strength of a backgammon position.

How scoring works

Add the fifteen positions separately for each player. A checker at point 6 adds 6 pips, one on the bar adds 25, and a borne-off checker adds zero. Lower pip count means fewer counted steps remaining; contact and blocked points can still change the game.

Worked example

The starting arrangement has two checkers on 24, five on 13, three on 8 and five on 6: 48 + 65 + 24 + 30 = 167 pips per side.

Scope and limits

Use each side’s own 1–24 numbering. No board legality, move search, race equity, winning probability, cube decision or money-game calculation is provided. Bar distance is counted as 25; it does not predict re-entry delay.

Inputs are calculated in this tab and are not saved by this tool. Editing inputs clears the previous result and disables exports until you calculate again. No account or remote table is required.
