Gin Rummy deadwood calculator
Find nonoverlapping Gin Rummy sets and runs that minimize deadwood. Analyze ten cards or compare permitted discards from eleven cards, with an explained result and CSV.
About the game and this companion
Gin Rummy players build sets of one rank and runs of one suit. Unmatched cards are deadwood. This calculator checks the arithmetic for your own hand.
How scoring works
The solver enumerates sets of 3–4 equal ranks and runs of at least 3 consecutive ranks in one suit, then searches disjoint meld combinations. Aces are low. Unmatched aces count 1, faces 10, and other cards their rank. For eleven cards, it solves the ten-card hands after discarding. If you just took a card from the discard pile, enter it in the protected-card field to exclude that immediate discard.
Worked example
AS 2S 3S, 7C 7D 7H and 9D 9H 9S form three melds. The remaining KD is 10 deadwood, within the standard 10-point knock limit.
Scope and limits
This is hand analysis, not a full scoring adjudicator. No opponent layoffs, undercuts, Gin/Big Gin bonuses, Oklahoma rules or opponent modeling. An eleven-card result applies only after the listed discard; it is not a recommendation based on opponent information.
Inputs are calculated in this tab and are not saved by this tool. Editing inputs clears the previous result and disables exports until you calculate again. No account or remote table is required.
